While researchers lunge at each other over issues that pertain to autism, one thing emerges that appears to be true. This is that the psychological mayhem may have been inherited one way or the other from a parent, and on a genetic basis. And this does make some sense, although even that is as yet to be signed in as a theory or law.
When you have an autistic child in the family, the whole lot of you are saddled with some very special challenges. Helping the child with the things that they want and the things that they need are going to be a full time job for everyone as there is not yet any known cure to the malady. And what’s more, you might have to fight it out the whole of the rest of your life.
Before the 90′s, Americans were aware but not very conscious of the number of kids that suffered from autism in the United States, since then though, up to 0.002% of American kids are now believed to suffer from the condition, a rise from the previous 0.0003%. I wouldn’t personally think that the numbers actually grew, more like we suddenly became more aware of the condition. And so many people suffer from this thing, it’s scary.
Many research facilities and professionals in the United States today have come quite a long way in their study of the disorder known as autism. With dramatically improved methods for diagnosing the syndrome, and much more standardized methods for the same, more and more kids are being diagnosed with it, making you wonder exactly how many there are in the world around you.
Autism is a disorder like none other you know. Even crazy people, you can tell what is wrong with them. And when they wants something, you can get it for them. Not so when you are dealing with autism. You cannot tell what the child wants; you cannot even see that the child wants anything. They are just by themselves in their own little world, and all you can do is guess and second guess.
Autism affects social, emotional, and behavioral development in kids. You can see the sufferer staring into space muttering words that are incoherent but to them the words make some sense. It doesn’t quite go down as brain dead or brain damage; just somewhere in between.
One thing that I do know about autistic people is that it is extremely difficult to get them to look you directly in the eye. Whether you are trying to tell them something, or they are trying to do the same for you, you might be well advised to go about it another way because the eye-locking thing is not going to work. And it could be quite frustrating too.
Rarely can you ever tell that a child is autistic before they reach the age of three. All the symptoms you might have been noticing in them prior to that, you have probably put down as something else, something that babies usually have. But by the time they begin to reach that age where you are expecting a lot more communication from the child, you will notice and know that something is amiss.
