Autism, Help them find their place in this world.

I read this article from a high functioning Autistic man.  I was saddened and moved that he struggled with himself to find where he fit.  I was also troubled to read his words of depression, loneliness and suicide.  This boy, who is now a man, needs help.  Where is his skill set?  Where is his purpose?  Where is his family?  Where is his sense of belonging? Where is his confidence?

I have thought for some time on my own little one.  He is a strapping young man of 4 years now.  He has started getting that light hair that boys get on their arms and legs.  He comes home from school now with dirt on his clothes and bruises on his shins and skinned knees.  I love that little boy.  Besides leaving my job to be with him full time, driving to therapy 2 days a week with an 4 hour commute, My JOB is to help him find HIS place in this world.  He may never be an articulate person, he many never like large crowds but, he WILL find that he will be good, no, GREAT at something, or many things.  I will work hard, endlessly, tirelessly for him.  I will grow with him as he emerges and maybe finds that he is great with… computer programming, mathematics, literature, poetry, car mechanics, cooking, folding laundry, gardening, horseback riding, raising chickens, construction, design, art, exercise, and music.  Or, you know what…just one of these!  Just one of these things will ensure that he will grow and know that he is a good person, valuable, wonderful, and unique.  And, it is MY job to make that happen.  MINE and MINE ALONE.
